Football, volleyball and soccer. Repeat. I've never considered myself much of a sports shooter, but this month has put my skills to the test. Fall prep sports proved to be in full swing in October, but I still managed to get a healthy mix of general assignments in there somewhere.

Now that I'm three months into my time at The Coeur d'Alene Press, I'm beginning to feel something amazing that I've never really felt before: the trust of a community to accurately tell their stories. I think people are beginning to recognize me and my name, and I feel this has allowed for me to have better access on assignment. The more sports I shoot, the more I'm realizing that shooting games is therapeutic for me. The action happens right in front of you, and while you always think you know what to expect, anything can happen at any moment so in reality you don't actually don't have any idea what's going to happen. Sporting events also always have so much packed into them: emotion, loud moments, quiet moments, sometimes the occasional puking kid. I'm always pushing myself to shoot beyond just the peak action, and am slowly, but surely, seeing games differently and as opportunities to look for new moments.

As I'm very, very late with posting this, I don't have much that is fresh to reflect upon... But I can tell you that the second month of my time as a staff photographer at The Coeur d'Alene Press gave me many opportunities to keep pushing, try new things and have fun. This paper offers me a lot of freedom to take risks, so I'm going to keep taking them every chance I get.

I never thought that I'd be fortunate enough to have a full-time staff job at a daily right after graduating, but here I am, my first month as part of a two-person photo team with Shawn Gust at The Coeur d'Alene Press wrapped up. It's been a month full of change, heat and constantly smokey skies, but I love knowing that everyday I get to make photographs for my job.

After not continually shooting daily news for a number of months, I've had to play some catch-up, but am extremely excited to keep pushing and trying new things. Working for a small daily has challenges and benefits, and I'm aiming to keep my sights on documenting the stories of this lakeside community in Northern Idaho in a way that is different and keen to my eye.

It's exciting working for a paper with so much potential. I'm seeing new ways in which this paper can grow and thrive, and I'm stoked to be on what I believe to be the cusp of a major change in the way this paper is viewed and operates.

I keep finding things I'd like to change about the way I approach a scene, assignment and photograph. Some of these images embellish the way I'd like to be making photographs; others, not so much. Breaking away from the ordinary, or making the ordinary look extraordinary is something I've struggled with in my photojournalistic work for a long time. Never being completely satisfied with my work and always searching for ways to make a photograph the way I see the world. The work isn't quite there yet, but I know it's coming. Things are missing in frames or there is too much, but I know what to do next.

I'm always looking for those quieter moments, or that soft light that evokes the mood of the scene I'm photographing. More often than not that proves to be very difficult, but I know that with every assignment and with every shutter release I'm working to be better at what I love doing the most: taking photographs and telling stories.
